A Bit out of Breath, She Must

Whether limited to confusion or disorientation or ranging to very severe cognition problems, dementia refers to a collection of conditions, both named and un-differentiated, including Alzheimer’s Disease. While not every condition can be treated, some can–yet many go undiagnosed.

Today’s poem touches on the disorientation that can come with dementia and other illnesses or conditions, even viral infections and high fevers.

A Bit out of Breath, She Must

She must answer the door
her daughter is there
a shadow of her daughter is falling
She must get off the phone
to answer the door
her daughter waits there
the call the call must be ending
She must get off the phone
with her daughter to answer
the door a shadow’s come calling
She must get off the call
with her daughter tonight
to answer her door
the daughter’s shadow is falling
She must get off the phone
her daughter is there at the door
the doorbell is calling
To answer the call she must
get off the door the shadow
her daughter stands waiting
Must she end this call
the door is just there
her daughter
a shadow is calling
