Wormhole – Poem of the Week for January 1, 2018

Wormhole – the first of a new feature

In  2018, I’ve decided to post one of my poems each week. Not every reader is out combing through poetry collections or browsing through poetry e-zines, so this is a little change-up for readers. Most of the poems will be ones that have been previously published, but some will be newer.

This week’s poem, Wormhole, is a sci-fi poem and is first out of the gate.  (Wormhole? Gate? Sci-fi? Too early in the year for groan-inducing wordplay?) Wormhole comes out of one of those times when a what-if question takes hold of your imagination and won’t let go until you get the poem down. It was originally published in Apex Magazine, Issue #92, January, 2017, which you can find here. Always good to start the New Year with a little more what-if, right?

Wormhole

I’ve almost lapped the light,
nearly rounded the corner from one day
to the next. Edges are always difficult: lines
between here, there; then, now; together,
alone. In the empty gap, whiteout fog
forms. It doesn’t creep. It doesn’t bother
me to be far out of touch. Devices
meant for contact gag me
with insistence. Everything I recalled was small?
Overwhelmed. Avocados expanded,
a boiled egg enlarged. I can’t see the curve,
but it’s there. Pulling me hard to one side. Or,
perhaps, jealously away. Accidents, events,
are common in dark spaces, which anyway
you must cross. Language hurts
my eyes. Touch underwhelms. I smell
the sea six hundred light years away.

If you enjoyed Wormhole

You can read more of my work on this site or in the collection Stars Crawl Out From Their Caves which is available in both ebook and print.

My plan is to post a poem weekly, probably on Mondays. So, look for another poem next Monday. As always, comments welcome. And meanwhile, I wish you all a few interesting what-if’s in the coming year.  Happy New Year!
